NYC Natural Gas Alarm Deadline: What Building Owners Need to Know

The New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) has confirmed that the deadline to install natural gas alarms in applicable residential buildings remains January 1, 2027.

Pursuant to Local Law 102 of 2025, the installation deadline would only be extended if fewer than four manufacturers produced approved battery-powered natural gas alarms. The Department has now identified at least four distinct manufacturers, confirming that the compliance deadline will not be extended.

What Building Owners Need to Know
On or before January 1, 2027, natural gas alarms must be installed in accordance with:

  • Section 908.13 of the New York City Building Code
  • 1 RCNY §908-02
  • 1 RCNY §3616-06
  • Applicable DOB rules and standards governing alarm placement and installation

These requirements are intended to enhance occupant safety by providing early detection of natural gas leaks within residential buildings.

  • Determine whether natural gas alarms are required
  • Identify locations where alarms must be installed
