Expediters to the Rescue: Rescue Company 3 FDNY Headquarters in the Bronx

One of five special operations rescue facilities in New York City, the firefighters of Rescue Company 3 in the Bronx needed an extremely efficient building for their headquarters. Because of the urgent nature of FDNY operations, the building had special infrastructure and equipment storage requirements.

Work and storage areas occupy the ground and basement levels of the 20,000-sq.-ft. facility while living areas and training and fitness spaces are located on the second and third floors. Oversized apparatus doors dominate the eastern façade.

Rescue Company 3 is located on a restricted site, so the architect designed stacked functions by floor, locating equipment storage on the ground floor and living space on the second floor. Because so many functions are packed into a small space, KM Associates consulted with the design team to get the Certificate of Occupancy in time for the official ribbon cutting to make Rescue Company 3 operational and the expeditors worked to ensure that Rescue Company 3 has a safe new headquarters for its operations.
