Carnegie Hall – Studio Towers Reno

The landmarked building has an amazing history, and the institution sought to build on that history by upgrading its facilities to meet the needs of the 21st Century. KM Associates consulted with the architects on building codes and zoning and expedited the project to gain approvals and maintain permits through construction of interior and exterior renovations.

The renovations involved creating new spaces for music education within the building’s existing upper floors and refurbishing backstage areas to achieve maximum efficiency. A new education wing includes 24 new ensemble rooms and teaching studios and provides a new home for the archives.

Because Carnegie Hall is a landmark, the renovations required the approval of the Landmarks Preservation Commission. KM Associates worked with all levels of the Department of Buildings, including the First Deputy Commissioner, for approval of numerous determinations (special requests) for design details that differed from traditional building code requirements. The expediters’ rapport with senior personnel at the Department of Buildings helped to speed the process of gaining approvals for the renovations. KM Associates also coordinated with the team to maintain permits during construction, including after hour work permits and working with the Department of Transportation to keep the project moving without getting any violations.

For more than 20 years, KM Associates has been working with Carnegie Hall — this is a special building to KM; we know it well.
