HOSTING AN EVENT? SECURE YOUR TEMPORARY PLACE OF ASSEMBLY PERMIT (TPA) FIRST!

Planning an indoor or outdoor company event? If your guest list includes 75 or more people indoors or 200 or more outdoors, and the venue doesn’t have a valid Place of Assembly Certificate of Occupancy (PACO), you’ll need a Temporary Place of Assembly (TPA) Permit—as required by both the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) and Fire Department (FDNY).

Do You Need a TPA Permit?

You will if:

  • Your indoor event has 75+ attendees
  • Your outdoor (enclosed) event has 200+ attendees
  • You’re exceeding the approved occupancy of an existing Place of Assembly

Filing Reminders:

  • Submit your TPA application 30–45 days prior to your event
  • Applications filed within 10 days of the event may be subject to daily late penalties
  • Applications filed within 5 days may not be reviewed in time

TPA Application Requirements:

  • Event layout plan
  • Fire protection and safety details
  • Exit signage and emergency lighting
  • ADA accessibility compliance
  • Fireguard assignments
  • Any other applicable safety features

Note: DOB and FDNY inspections may occur at any time before or during the event. If the FDNY conducts an on-site inspection, additional fees may apply.

Inspection Fees:

  • DOB inspections: No fee
  • FDNY inspections (based on expected attendance):
    • 75–149 guests: $415
    • 150–499 guests: $520
    • 500–999 guests: $625
    • 1,000–2,499 guests: $725
    • 2,500–9,999 guests: $830
    • 10,000+ guests / stadiums: $210 per hour

Don’t Forget:
Additional permits may be required for public spaces, including DOT approvals and FDNY flame permits for grills, sternos, ovens, and other heat-producing equipment.
